He was surrounded by dust and barren lands. There was no hope left.

Better times replayed in his mind. Rosie, Marigold, Tom all playing in the pool  by Bywater, ales at the Green Dragon, seeing his favorite daffodil bloom in the Spring. Strawberry fields and the Party tree by Bag End. Tending to Mr. Frodo by his armchair while he served his favorite mushroom dish.

These images echoed in his mind. Will he ever see them again? Will he cherish and wallow in the sweet grass of Hobbiton again?

A star twinkled far beyond the smoke and clouds of Mordor.
