Elendil sighed heavily. Gil-galad looked at him questioningly.

‘I am not sure you realize,’ Elendil said, ‘how difficult it is for us to fight Sauron again. We should have been able to do more against him, in Numenor, but years of having all our attempts foiled, after that long unstoppable slide, earlier, into irrelevance among the powerful—if you and your people were not here to give me hope, I am not sure we could do it.’

‘I have my own defeats to look back on,’ said Gil-galad. ‘You give me courage just as much. We are doing it together.’

This is well imagined to take place before the Last Alliance.

That is the last time that the elves and men battled together against Sauron. Good to hear that they both still share hope.
