NOKES
I could’ve wished a better playmate for that grandson of mine. Little Nokes was named for me, but he’s as different from me as night to day. So impractical a boy, playing about with Smithson, listening to his fairy-tales. The both of them as full of moonshine and nonsense as that cracked ‘prentice of mine, Alf.
And Smithson, always vanishing off to who knows where for who knows how long. I’m grateful that he’s never tried to take young Nokes along with him.
If he weren’t good at his trade, he’d have come to a bad end, mark my words.
