In Happier Days -- a reminiscence by Meriadoc Brandybuck
We were still young and innocent then. The horror of the Nazgul had only briefly touched us, like a bad dream in the night that vanishes with daybreak. We had been safe and happy in the house of Elrond, still regarding the quest as a lark. On the journey south, Pippin and I befriended Boromir, who kindly took us under his wing, and taught us some of the fighting skills that had kept him alive, all those years battling against the evil of Mordor. How could we suspect the evils that lay ahead, playing at sword-fighting on that sunny day?
