As he sails over Imladris, he leans out. Today, the night is clear. Far below, Elrond steps out onto a starlit terrace and raises his arm in a sketchy wave. He started waving like this--when the evening star is visible and there are no witnesses below—a short time after Elros left and has continued ever since: awkward and stubborn, the gesture of someone who does not know if he is seen.
‘But I see you, Elrond, I see you clearly,’ murmurs Earendil.
Below, Elrond shrugs and enters his house—the inside of which his father will never see.

Theirs is, I think, a very sad story. I always want to give Elrond a 'happy ever after' - but somehow I cannot see him without a touch of melancholy.

Yes.
Well, "happy ever afters" rarely do seem to come without at least a little touch of melancholy in Arda, but in Elrond's case more so than most.

I found your own portrayal of Earendil in Hanstovanen impressive--but I can't help it--when I try to write about him myself, it turns out bleaker...

It's why I haven't really written about Elrond; it's just too depressing. Here is a really nice, decent, intelligent chap, we're not talking about a neurotic idiot like Turin, and through no fault of his own he suffers probably more personal loss than any other elf in history.
