The snow lay deep everywhere, and ice formed thickly on the sluggish waters of the Brandywine.

Fires burned in hearths across the Shire but every night frost still laid its intricate patterns on the inside of windows.

Only the hardiest Hobbit lads and lasses ventured out to make snow figures with pebbles for eyes and sticks for arms.

When white wolves were sighted on the northern borders none set foot outside hole or house for play.

Danger hung heavily in the air.

A long winter and a grim one lay ahead and many would not live to see the spring.
