Summary: Finrod and Beren in Sauron's prison.

Even Finrod’s eyes could barely make out the forms of his companions. He could hear Beren breathing, mortal-loud, but could not tell if he was moving. It was a relief when Beren spoke.

“I can see your eyes shining in the darkness,” Beren murmured. “Like a cat’s.” Finrod heard him draw in a long breath and let it out again. “Tell me, my lord, have you ever been any place so dark?”

“Yes,” Finrod said softly. “When the Trees died, and Ungoliant’s poison made the air darker than mere absence of light. That was the first time we knew darkness.”
