Shearing Time (non-Challenge), by Himring
Aug. 2nd, 2025 05:43 pmAuthor: Himring
Source / Fandom: Unfinished Tales
Rating: Teens
Warnings: Dysfunctional marriage
Characters: Ancalime (Queen of Numenor)
Disclaimer: It is Tolkien who describes how Hallacar ruined his wife's attachment to her childhood home; Himring added some thoughts on Ancalime's feelings.
Always Ancalime has been at ease among sheep and green hills. She grew up among them; that was where she retreated to, as Princess Shepherdess, when she did not want to deal with court life. If a citizen of Armenelos had brought up sheep-shearing to her, the way they sometimes bring up the smell or the sound of baaing, she would have shrugged. It is the way of things. That is how wool is obtained.
It is only when her feud with Hallacar strips her of refuge and trust, that suddenly she feels herself the distress of the newly-shorn sheep.
A/N: "Shearing Time" is the title of the poem by Langston Hughes that supplied the prompt this drabble was written for.
