How could I have known Sam so well, and so little? I knew him as a sweet faunt, fists full of flowers, then as my gardener lad, in whose hands Bag End bloomed. I knew him as my wide-eyed fellow dreamer, ears ever open to tales of dragons and elves. I knew him at midnight and before dawn, his sweet lips and warm gentle hands, the fit of our bodies and the wonder in his dark eyes. But it took this dark journey, from which there may be no return, for me belatedly to know his courage, his strength, his heart.

Ruby, this is quite lovely, and I think it is my favorite of all your drabbles I've read so far!

Thank you! Yeah, it didn't come out badly. I wrote it after rereading the bit where they meet the Elves in the Shire, and Frodo is amazed at how different Sam seems to him (although I don't intend this to be set in that moment, but further along). Someone said once that that bit was an argument against slashing Frodo and Sam, because if they were sleeping together wouldn't they know each other better than that? I thought about it and decided I didn't agree.
