The First Obstacle
It has been a long time since he had felt the warmth of the sun. The Barrow had left him cold and even though Bombadil’s song brought him back to present, Pippin felt scared and for the first time since leaving the Shire, some doubt had crept into his heart about the journey he had promised to partake in.
He hurried along to catch up with the other hobbits as they stayed in Bombadil’s home for the night. The warmth of the home, Goldberry’s song brought him back to better spirits, and he felt winter lifted. Joy and hope returned.

Recovery in Rivendell
When Frodo woke in Rivendell, he felt warmer and less cold than in the fortnight that he had been wounded almost fatally. He shuddered to think of those dark times, but Gandalf, Sam and his cousins’ attention brought him to the present and he felt more heartened and at peace than he did for a long time.
Rivendell was not only a place for song and poetry, but also brought back aspiration into Frodo’s heart, and he felt even more invigorated to be reunited to a long missed relative.
Bilbo!
His worries disappeared as he embraced his dear long-lost hobbit.
…
Hope Rekindled
Even the stoutest hobbit felt all hope dissolve when he thought his master had died. How could he go on without Mr. Frodo? How could the wisest expect ole Samwise to go on?
And finish he must because he was all that was left of the Fellowship at that moment.
He reluctantly said goodbye to his master, kissed him one last time.
Overhearing the orcs when they arrived to say that his master was not dead made him less doubtful of what had to be done.
Doubt melted away, hope returned. He had to finish the job with his master.

Overcoming the Black Breath (200 words)
Long had his dreams been dark. Merry felt like he had been swept in darkness, forever being cold and lost in an undertow of doubt, uncertainty and despair. But he awoke to the smell of athelas, and old friends looked anxiously upon him. The dark dreams disappeared.
“I was so worried for you, Merry- how are you feeling?” Pippin asked
“I am fine. I am hungry, what is the time?”***
But hunger made him think of his pipe as well and of King Theoden, what a pity that the kindly King that had been lost in battle.
Merry frowned. “I …I don’t think I'll smoke again.”
“You shall smoke and think of him,” said Aragorn. “Face the sunshine and not let the Black Breath overtake you again.”
And Merry’s thoughts turned positive, for he was grateful for being alive. The darkness abated entirely and wisdom replaced his anxiousness, and he thought about how important it was to love first what was fitted to be loved and that he had to start somewhere.
But he shook off his unexpected pensiveness and asked Pippin for his pipe again. He chased sunshine by going back to the familiar of how he remembered home.
