It was Groa who saw the Raven first. She had climbed the highest Hill—unusual, but Groa was not one for hewing close to custom. She had been looking northwards to the place of her birth—then she saw the black messenger flying in haste from the West and knew the news was ill. She lifted her arm and the Raven alighted and spoke.
Once, Groa had been among those who fled, having lost kin to the Cold-drake; now a fiery dragon had come south to Erebor. Ice and Fire—equally deadly. Groa cried out, grieving again for dragon-slain kin.
