Notes: Written for faramir_boromir's "excesses" challenge. I'm reading through UT at the moment, and when I thought of excess this tale instantly came to mind.

Lovely. I don't know the tale, but you've given such a clear evocation of the loss I barely need to read it to understand her distress. Tolkien always seems to use destroyers of Nature as shorthand for the 'bad guy'.

Yes, Tolkien does ike to slip in a little eco-friendly message, doesn't he. Aldarion tearing up the trees of Numenor, Saruman ravaging Fangorn Forest. But he also likes nature to hit back, rather than just taking it. The Ents and Huorns fought back, the trees in the Old Wood defended themselves, and on a bigger scale, even Caradhras didn't like being messed with.
