Title: Interlude
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mrkinch
Work: Lord of the Rings
Character: Boromir
Adult Content/Pairing: None
Disclaimer: JRRT made this world. I made this drabble.
Author Note: An introspective piece dependent upon Another Doom.

Boromir believed that his brother understood his mind in this, though they never spoke of it, for Faramir understood him in all things. Faramir had some resource, too, some greatness of heart that he did not, that kept his brother in hope when Boromir could find none. Perhaps hope came more easily to a second son, though Faramir's love of Gondor was no less. But whatever their father might wish, and he wished always to set them one against the other, Faramir would know too well that in taking this desperate journey upon himself, Boromir spared no weakness but his own.

Ah, that works beautifully! I like how you've clarified the POV, and it's all much clearer and sharper now. Wonderful.

...for Faramir understood him in all things.
This is such a beautiful expression of their closeness, a closeness which must have been a source of jealousy for Denethor--he wished always to set them one against the other
Another lovely drabble! Thanks for sharing this.

Hmm ... I really like the look into Boromir's mind, and the depiction of the bond between him and Faramir. But it doesn't make sense to me that Denethor would try to set them against each other, at least not in the bookverse. It seems far more likely to me that he'd be grooming Faramir to be Boromir's advisor and supporter. Of course, if you're talking about movie-Denethor, I'd believe almost anything of him.

See, I don't think there was a huge difference between book-Denethor's judgment of Faramir and Boromir's. I don't think book-Denethor saw Faramir as incompetent, I think he just thought Faramir had an attitude problem. And I still think he'd be working to weld them into a unit--a unit with Faramir always firmly subordinate to Boromir, but a unit nonetheless.

But, y'know, that's just my reading, and I probably shouldn't even have mentioned it, because I'm not trying to force it on anyone.

Nice drabble, anyway!
