Title : Reception committee
Author : Himring
Fandom/Source : The Silmarillion, History of Middle-earth
Rating : PG13
Characters : Maeglin, Salgant
Disclaimer : Tolkien's characters (no offence intended, no monetary recompense received).
Spoilers/Warnings : I guess not? Except I that I suspect Tolkien didn't intend this to happen. Oh, and I guess it reveals that Maeglin died at some point?
Summary : Maeglin leaves Mandos. (This is completely out of sequence, which is why I hesitated to write or post it, but it was clearly blocking all other responses to the prompt.)
The Gates of Mandos cracked open and Maeglin inched through as if a regiment of balrogs were waiting for him. In fact, it was unexpectedly quiet outside. Maeglin blinked, confused by dappled sunlight. Then he spotted Salgant, who had been sitting on a boulder and nervously scoffing a sizable hummus and artichoke sandwich.
‘It’s all right,’ said Salgant quickly, getting up. ‘They all wanted to come, but we decided that if it was just me, it might be less…,’ he seemed to be looking for a circumlocution and failing, ‘terrifying?’
He regarded Maeglin hopefully.
‘You terrify me quite suffiently, Salgant.’

Date: 2018-03-31 10:37 am (UTC)I sort of asked Salgant whether he was sure about that sandwich and he said quite firmly that that was what he was having. It's not something that I had envisioned as being served in the Sixth Age (or whenever this is) in Valinor before, but what do I know of the post-Darkening development of Tirionese cooking? I gave in to the expert.

Salgant's sandwich somehow seems to be connected to chargrilled artichoke hearts that IRL a local supermarket was offering as a "bargain". They were still eye-wateringly expensive, despite the reduction, so I passed on them. It wasn't that I had been planning to put them on a sandwich, particularly...
