Author Notes: Written for a challenge set by

far_from_gondor. The opening line is hers, the rest is my own. The reference Maedhros makes to being damned comes from one of my previous fics.

The story wasn't supposed to end this way. It should have ended five hundred years before, with my brothers, my cousin and my father all still alive, without the bloodshed and war that brought us to this moment on the edge of oblivion.

I stared at the Silmarils in their casket, my hand hovering over them. Their light, that I once thought so beautiful, was now searing and cold.

Do you remember, Macalaurë, that I once said we were damned? This then is the moment of our damnation. This is the story we wrote, and this is how it ends.
